  1. 01What is Node.js and how does it differ from running JS in a browser?

Node.js is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 engine that runs outside the browser. There's no DOM or window; instead you get filesystem, OS and network APIs, all wired into a single-threaded, event-driven, non-blocking I/O model.

    EasyMost asked

  2. 02What is the event loop?

The event loop is what lets Node do non-blocking I/O on a single thread: it hands slow work (disk, network, timers) off to libuv or the OS, keeps running your code, and comes back to run the right callback once that work finishes and the call stack is empty.

    Easy

  3. 03CommonJS vs ES Modules in Node?

CommonJS (require / module.exports) is Node's original, synchronous module system. ESM (import / export) is the standard JS module system: asynchronous and statically analysable. Both are cached after the first load.

    Easy

  4. 04What is semver and what do ^ and ~ mean in package.json?

Semantic versioning is MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH. ^1.4.2 allows minor and patch updates (up to <2.0.0); ~1.4.2 allows only patch updates (up to <1.5.0). package-lock.json records the exact resolved version of every dependency so installs are reproducible.

    Easy

  5. 05How does Node's module caching work?

require() caches a module by its resolved absolute path the first time it's loaded. Every later require() for that same path returns the same cached exports object — the file's top-level code runs only once.

These are the 50 Node.js questions that come up most in backend and full-stack interviews, ordered from easy to hard. Each one starts with the short answer you should say first, then explains it properly with code, diagrams and the follow-up questions interviewers tend to ask next.

What does each answer include?

  • A two-line short answer you can say word for word at the start.
  • The detailed answer: how it works, with code and its output where it helps.
  • Traps and follow-ups: the mistakes interviewers look for, and the next question they usually ask.
  • Hinglish explanations for the tricky ideas: the event loop's phases, backpressure and graceful shutdown.

How should you practise with these questions?

Cover the answer, say yours out loud, then compare. Write the coding questions yourself (a custom EventEmitter, debounce, a REST CRUD route with Express, JWT middleware) before reading the solutions. The night before the interview, go through the one-line answers at the end of the PDF.

This is Part 4 of the interview questions series. To learn the concepts first, see the Node.js handwritten notes.
