What's inside
24 topics, one page each
- 01What Java is, JDK vs JRE vs JVM
- 02How Java runs, JIT, and JVM memory areas
- 03Data types, wrapper classes and the Integer cache
- 04Casting and operator traps
- 05Strings and the string pool
- 06String vs StringBuilder vs StringBuffer
- 07Arrays and the Arrays class
- 08Why Java is always pass-by-value
- 09The Collections framework
- 10ArrayList vs LinkedList, ConcurrentModificationException
- 11HashSet, TreeSet, HashMap, TreeMap, ConcurrentHashMap
- 12How HashMap works internally
- 13Comparable vs Comparator
- 14Generics, wildcards, PECS and type erasure
- 15Exceptions, try-with-resources and finally traps
- 16Creating threads, start vs run, thread states
- 17synchronized, volatile, wait vs sleep, deadlock
- 18ExecutorService, Future, CompletableFuture, concurrent collections
- 19Lambdas and functional interfaces
- 20Streams API: map, filter, collect, groupingBy, flatMap
- 21Optional, records, sealed classes and virtual threads
- 22Garbage collection, StackOverflowError vs OutOfMemoryError
- 23Output-based questions
- 24Last-minute revision cheat sheet
Java interviews for freshers go beyond syntax. They ask how HashMap works inside, why 127 == 127 is true but 128 == 128 is false, whether Java is pass-by-value, what volatile really guarantees, and how to answer a stream question on the spot. These notes cover those questions, one topic per page.
What makes these Java notes different?
- Internals explained with diagrams. JVM memory areas, the string pool, HashMap buckets and collisions, thread states and GC generations.
- The traps that cost marks. The Integer cache,
b = b + 1on a byte, returninsidefinally, removing from a list while iterating, andremove(int)vsremove(Object). - Modern Java. Streams with the classic interview questions, Optional, records, sealed classes and virtual threads.
- Hinglish where it helps. Hard ideas get a short Hinglish explanation next to the English definition.
How should you use these Java notes?
Open jshell and try each snippet as you read. Attempt the output-based questions before checking the answers, then use the last page as a one-page revision sheet.
This is Part 10 of the series. Read it with the OOPs handwritten notes, which cover classes, SOLID and design patterns with Java examples.
FAQ
Questions about these notes
Are these Java notes really free?
Yes. The full 26-page PDF is free; email me to request the complete PDF. Share it with friends preparing for placements.
Do these notes cover OOP in Java?
They focus on the Java language itself: JVM, types, Strings, Collections, concurrency and Java 8+. OOP concepts (the four pillars, abstract class vs interface, SOLID, design patterns) are in the separate OOPs handwritten notes, which also use Java examples.
Is HashMap internal working explained?
Yes, with a diagram: hashing, the bucket index, collisions, equals, the 16 / 0.75 resize rule and treeification into red-black trees since Java 8, plus HashMap vs Hashtable vs ConcurrentHashMap.
Do the notes cover Java 8 and newer features?
Yes: lambdas, functional interfaces, method references, the Streams API, Optional, var, switch expressions, records, sealed classes, pattern matching and Java 21 virtual threads.
