Next.js is the most asked-about React framework in frontend and full-stack interviews, and version 16 changed a lot: caching is now explicit with 'use cache', middleware became proxy, and request APIs are async. These notes cover the current App Router one idea per page, with short TypeScript examples.
What makes these Next.js notes different?
- Up to date with Next.js 16. Cache Components,
cacheLifeandcacheTag,updateTagvsrevalidateTag,proxy.ts, asyncparamsand the newerror.tsxretry(). - The mental model first. Server vs Client Components, where
'use client'boundaries go, and why passing a Server Component as children keeps it on the server. - Security called out. Server Actions are public endpoints and proxy is only an optimistic check, so every page shows where the real auth check belongs.
- Interview ready. An old-vs-new API table, the common hydration errors and their fixes, and short answers to the questions asked most.
How should you use these Next.js notes?
Create a fresh app with npx create-next-app@latest and build each page's example as you read. Pay extra attention to the caching and Server Actions pages, since they come up most in interviews. Use the last page as a revision sheet.
This is Part 15 of the series. For the basics underneath, see the React handwritten notes.
FAQ
Questions about these notes
Are these Next.js notes really free?
Yes. The full 26-page PDF is free; email me to request the complete PDF. Share it with friends preparing for placements.
Which version of Next.js do the notes cover?
Next.js 16 with the App Router, including Cache Components and 'use cache', proxy.ts (the renamed middleware), async params, updateTag and the other 16 changes. A table maps the old Pages Router APIs to their App Router equivalents.
Do I need to know React first?
Yes. Next.js is built on React, so learn components, props, state and hooks first. The React handwritten notes (Part 3) cover those, and the TypeScript notes (Part 14) help with the typed examples.
Are Next.js interview questions included?
Yes. One page has short answers to the most common questions, such as Server vs Client Components, SSR vs SSG vs ISR, Partial Prerendering, Server Action security and hydration errors, and the last page is a revision sheet.
