Computer Networks questions in placement interviews are mostly about a handful of ideas: the OSI layers, TCP vs UDP, the 3-way handshake, DNS, HTTPS, subnetting, and the famous "what happens when you type a URL". These notes cover each of them on one page, with diagrams and solved numericals.

What makes these Computer Networks notes different?

  • The URL question, step by step. One page that walks through DNS, ARP, NAT, TCP, TLS, HTTP and rendering in the right order.
  • Subnetting without fear. A cheat table and a block-size shortcut that solves most subnetting questions in under a minute.
  • Diagrams for every flow. OSI vs TCP/IP, encapsulation, DHCP's DORA, the 3-way handshake, DNS resolution and TCP's congestion window.
  • Hinglish where it helps. Every hard concept gets a short Hinglish explanation next to the English definition.

How should you use these Computer Networks notes?

Do the subnetting and delay numericals on paper, then check yourself with the questions near the end. Try ping, traceroute and nslookup on your own machine as you read. The last page is a one-page revision sheet.

This is Part 8 of the series. Together with the Operating System notes and the SQL and DBMS notes, it covers the core CS theory asked in placements.

FAQ

Questions about these notes

Are these Computer Networks notes really free?

Yes. The full 26-page PDF is free; email me to request the complete PDF. Share it with friends preparing for placements.

Is subnetting explained with examples?

Yes. There is a prefix cheat table, a worked split of a /24 into four /26 subnets, finding the subnet of a given host, and a VLSM example, plus subnetting questions to practise.

Do the notes answer 'what happens when you type a URL'?

Yes. A full page walks through the browser cache, DNS lookup, ARP and NAT, the TCP and TLS handshakes, the HTTP request, the server side and rendering, in the order interviewers expect.

Are numericals included?

Yes: subnetting, transmission and propagation delay, stop-and-wait efficiency, window sizes, bandwidth-delay product and TCP congestion window growth, all solved step by step.
