C is still the first coding language in many campus placement tests, and its output questions catch even good programmers. These notes explain one idea per page, with short programs you can compile with gcc and check yourself.

What makes these C notes different?

  • The classic traps, explained. i++ + ++i, integer division, switch fall-through, macro expansion and sizeof inside a function, each with the reason behind the answer.
  • Pointers and memory, step by step. From & and * to pointer arithmetic, const pointers, function pointers, malloc/realloc and the memory layout.
  • What interviewers love to ask. struct vs union, structure padding, storage classes, bit tricks, and undefined behaviour vs segmentation faults.
  • A quiz and a cheat sheet. Predict the output of 11 snippets, then revise everything from the last page.

How should you use these C notes?

Type each example, compile it with gcc -Wall, and guess the output before you run it. Redo the padding and bit manipulation examples on paper, since they come up as written questions. Use the interview Q&A and the cheat sheet the night before the test.

This is Part 16 of the series. For object-oriented C++ on top of these basics, see the C++ handwritten notes.

FAQ

Questions about these notes

Are these C language notes really free?

Yes. The full 26-page PDF is free; email me to request the complete PDF. Share it with friends preparing for placements.

Are these notes good for beginners?

Yes. They start from compilation, data types and operators, then build up to pointers, dynamic memory and structure padding. You only need a C compiler such as gcc to try the examples.

Do the notes cover pointers and memory in depth?

Yes. Pointer basics, pointer arithmetic, double and const pointers, function pointers, malloc, calloc, realloc and free, the memory layout, and common bugs like leaks, dangling pointers, double free and segmentation faults.

Do the notes include C output questions?

Yes. There is an output prediction quiz with answers and explanations, plus output-style traps on operators, macros, structure padding and undefined behaviour throughout the notes.
