Git comes up in almost every developer interview, and you use it from day one at any job. These notes explain Git one idea per page, with commit-graph sketches and commands you can run in a practice repo.

What makes these Git notes different?

  • Answers to the classic questions. fetch vs pull, merge vs rebase, reset vs revert, switch vs checkout and Git vs GitHub, each with a clear rule.
  • Pictures of what really happens. The three areas, commit objects, branches as pointers, fast-forward and three-way merges, and rebasing are all drawn as graphs.
  • Real team workflow. Forks and pull requests, branching strategies, good commit messages, SSH keys and a GitHub Actions CI file.
  • Rescue tools. stash, cherry-pick, reflog and bisect, so you can recover from mistakes instead of deleting the folder.

How should you use these Git notes?

Create a practice repo and run every command as you read. Make two branches, cause a merge conflict on purpose and resolve it, then try a rebase and a reset and recover with reflog. Use the quiz and the last page as revision before the interview.

This is Part 17 of the series. For the coding side of interviews, see the DSA handwritten notes.

FAQ

Questions about these notes

Are these Git notes really free?

Yes. The full 26-page PDF is free; email me to request the complete PDF. Share it with friends preparing for placements.

Do I need any coding background to follow these Git notes?

No. You only need to open a terminal. The notes start from what version control is and build up to branches, merging, rebasing and pull requests, with a command for every step.

Do the notes explain merge vs rebase and reset vs revert?

Yes. Both have their own pages with commit-graph sketches and comparison tables: fast-forward vs three-way merge, the golden rule of rebasing, the three modes of git reset, and when to use revert instead.

Is GitHub covered, or only Git?

Both. The notes cover forks and pull requests, code review, branching strategies, SSH keys, a basic GitHub Actions CI workflow, Issues and branch protection.
